Hey there my little pineapples! ~

Today I want to suggest you the book "Uncle Tom's Cabin", which I read in the interval of two weeks, as I had to for school.
But I'd say it was totally worth it!

First, a short summary of content:

The mainplot is about a slave named Tom, who lives in Kentucky. He manages the farm of his owner Mr. Shelby who treats his slaves very well and has a trusty relationship with them. But one day Mr. Shelby has to sell Tom and Harry, the son of Eliza, another servant, due to depts. Hence Tom is separated from his wife and his children and sold to a new Master who is called Mr. St. Claire. This man is, as contrasted with his wife, pretty indulgent to his slaves. He has got a daughter who asked him to buy Tom and soon a friendship was built between the girl and the slave, reinforced by their Christian confession. But the little girl contracted with consumption and died after she had uttered her last wish. She requested her father to free Tom and he planned to do so, but was murdered before. His wife Mrs. St. Claire did not want to relinquish the money and therefore she sold Tom to Mr. Legree who owned a cotton plantation. He is a violent fellow who wants Tom to be the supervisor for the other slaves, but that would mean to beat them and treat them unhuman. Consequently Tom refused to do so but gave hope to the desperated with his Christian love. Mr. Legree tries to break his confession by beating him but Tom resists and forgave his Master and even prayed for his soul when he died because of the abuse. Meanwhile George Shelby, the son of Mr. Shelby tries to find Tom and buy him again, as promised, but he is to late and as he burried Tom's body, he bid fair to look after his family. When he got back to Kentucky he freed all his slaves and employed them regularly.
The subplot is about Eliza, who, after having heard that her son Harry is going to be sold and separated from her, fled. Finally she found her husband and they were able to escape to Canada with the aid of some Quarkers. In Canada they meet Eliza's mother and her husband's sister who also escaped slavery and move to France, where Eliza's husband studied. After that the whole family moves to Liberia where they helped to build an African state for slaves who fled from their owners.

Now, I'd like to describe my favourite scene and afterwards my own opinion:

My favourite scene in "Uncle Tom's Cabin" is when Eliza's husband, George, who escaped from his owner, meets his previous owner and tells him his really sad story. What makes this scene my favourite is, that Mr. Wilson, George's previous Master, cries in the end and gives him some money, so that he could make his way to Canada. I think this represents, that even when slavery was common, there have been a few people who still knew humanity and pity and although it was forbidden, tried to helped the slaves as they saw them as humans and not as their property.

I think, that this book is utterly thought-provoking and it reminds you, that you should be happy with those things you have. In one part of the book Stowe writes from the perspective of a slave who said something like the only thing he owns are the flowers on the field. And that made me realise, that in our community it seems to be natural to own a flat or a house and to go to school or work. We have the opportunity to express our opinion and we are protected by the human rights. Only this book pointed up, that slaves did not even own their body and the only thing they could do was praying and believe in God. Although it is sometimes a bit hard to understand, because of the language it is written, this book is totally worth to be read.

As mentioned in my last post, I would like to give you some further information about this young huntress. She is a 19 year old Texan, who was addicted to hunting since she was little, due to her father, being a hunter himself. Therefore she started, as soon as she was able to use a gun, to kill animals. Lately there has been an uproar caused by the pictures she posts on her facebook page. They show her, posing next to her unusual prey, like lions or a cheetah. In brief: Kendall Jones uses her free time to travel to Africa and kill animals that are partly already critically endangered. After that she defiles them by taking pictures with them smiling as they were her birthday gift. In my opinion this is so utterly tacky, that I just don't even have words to describe it. Well I don't want to say, that I can't accept hunting itself, but WHY does this girl think she is allowed to contribute to the extinction of certain species. I think that there is just no reason except wanting to be popular, because I can't imagine her to eat the animals she kills. This is why I want to call on the sanity of you, who may read this post, to take part in the petition (the link is in my last post) and support it, as I'd really like to stop this irrational acting.
The only thing to do is adding an email and your name (it doesn't even have to be your real one).
Let's at least try to save some lives.
